The year of 2020 produced some fantastic board games despite the circumstances! But with 2021 already here, we’re hoping to kick off the new year with a look at some of the hottest upcoming games on the board game scene and maybe some you haven’t even heard of yet!
Starting with A War of Whispers Second Edition! In this game are five mighty empires, vying for dominance in a war for the world! But you do not play as those armies battling on the fields, you instead take on the mantle of being a part of a secret society betting on the results of these conflicts, pulling the strings of the world along the way. With hidden agendas and ever-changing loyalties at the forefront, this game is one for those who love some deep strategic gameplay! Your aim is to ensure that at the end of the game, the faction that has the most control over the globe is the one that you are the most loyal to. This game’s original edition was lauded for being a shorter and more intrigue-heavy version of A Game of Thrones: The Board Game or Dune, so if that intrigues you then make sure to keep an eye out for A War of Whispers!
Paper Town is a quick and aesthetically simple tile-placement game! You’ll be creating great buildings like the Zoo, a Nuclear Plant or even the Royal Palace out of paper! Following the creation of your constructions, you’ll be placing popularity tokens atop them and once you’ve run out of popularity tokens, you win! Paper Towns has an adorable look with some interesting gameplay, so if you love cute, crafty and unique games, this one might be right up your paper alley!
Travel across the globe on incredibly dangerous missions to recruit new mutants, capture criminals, protect innocent lives and battle some of the most notable Marvel villains in X-Men: Mutant Insurrection! In this game, you’ll build your team of mutants from iconic characters like Wolverine, Rogue and Storm before utilizing your various dice to complete the scenarios ahead of you! Fight for the future in X-Men: Mutant Insurrection!
Have you and your friends ever wanted to work together to perform strenuous medical procedures in real-time?! Well, now you can in Rush MD! This worker placement game puts you in the shoes of a Doctor and several Nurses in order for you to run around the hospital performing medical care, admitting patients and performing whatever exams or surgeries are needed at the time! Instead of usual meeples to represent workers, these medical professionals are hourglasses, meaning that once you place a worker to perform an action, you can’t move them again until the hourglass runs out! Whether or not this is too much like real-life at the moment, Rush MD lo looks set to be a hit!
Donning the Purple is a ‘King of the Hill’ game with a dash of worker placement where each player leads a powerful ancient family of Rome trying to gain the most victory points over 4 rounds! If you become the Emperor, you’ll get a lot of points, but once you are the Emperor, you’ll gain a target on your back as all of the other houses try to dethrone you! With timeless components and a beautiful board, Donning the Purple could fill the historical board game hole on your shelf!
