Everdell - the game that you can keep playing

Written by Daniel Grist - Nov 04 2022

With many people looking forward to adding Everdell Complete Edition to their collection I figured that now is an excellent time to delve into the base game if you haven't heard much about it.

Everdell is probably one of the games I can get to the table most frequently at home when it is just me and my wife instead of my regular gaming group. Everdell isn't a heavily competitive game, if your only intention is to win some big long euro game.

Everdell is an engine builder with a cute but equally beautiful design, and it features worker placement and special powers from cards. When we play on a weeknight, it works well as it is possible to play through the game in under an hour.

The 'weight' of the game and the gorgeous design is probably why it's often the game my wife asks us to play. The game is well produced with high-quality components, evident from when you first opened the box; even the Evertree is a great addition that makes the game unique.

The game mechanics are well thought through, and each card provides different interactions or combinations, making it fun to learn on the first few plays but enjoyable to play differently in each game.

Everdell has great replayability with a great variety of cards, and different special events or forest cards can drastically change your focus for a particular game. Card powers are relatively simple to understand, and throughout games, there are some opportunities for me to feel clever as I combine various abilities in the game to maximise my points.

The player interaction can sometimes be limited, but there are elements such as if there's only one good location for pebbles. You better think hard about when you prepare for the season and open up that slot for your opponent to lock up for the next 3-4 turns.

Everdell is one of our favourites in our household. If you like Everdell, another good recommendation for another light to medium-weight game, in my opinion, would be Wingspan.
