Monkey Palace

Lego Monkey Palace Board Game

Set to be a family favourite, Monkey Palace is a new game featuring Lego which incorporates the exciting elements of building, strategy and most importantly FUN. The aim of the game is to play co-operatively, but with an element of competition as you play against each other to gain banana points and help the Monkey character! It has a simple method of gameplay and so is great for families with children, but to be honest, it feels fun for Lego fans of all ages. There is no one way to win Monkey Palace, so every game is different, making it perfect for playing during the Christmas period and beyond!

Dotted Games is a new studio from Asmodee UK and it’s awesome sounding mission is to bring fans and families the best Lego Board games worldwide. As fans of both Lego and tabletop gaming, the Chaos Cards team are eager to try out the Monkey Palace Board Game. Read along to find out how it went!

The aim of Monkey Palace is to compete against each other whilst helping to rebuild a Palace for the main monkey, simply put, this is a game of monkey business. Jonnii had fun unboxing the game, which you can check out on our Chaos Cards Youtube channel. With this being a Lego game, this involves the fun task of building your way to success! The aim of the game is to strategically create long and high staircases in order to access the bricks and banana points, all whilst the ever vigilant Monkey watches over you. So no monkeying around..

Welcome to the Jungle

Lego Monkey Palace is a board game for 2 – 4 players which is suitable for players over the age of 10. It is a fairly easy to learn game which is perfect for families, and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. The main mechanics of the game make use of the card decks, and could be referred to as a tableau building game (where your actions and resources are dictated by the cards you lay out in front of you and collet throughout the game. This often means you can run out of valuable game space as the cards end up taking up so much room!)We like that the different ground maps and optional rules mean that you can play the game multiple times, without it being too repetitive. The Chaos Cards team love that there is no single route to victory. A fun take on the game is that although you are building co-operatively, you are competing against other players in order to gain banana points. This means that family board game night looks set to become even more interesting then normal!

Lego Monkey Palace is definitely an upgrade on previous Lego board games. We found that it did require a couple of run-throughs to fully understand how to play, especially for the younger players. With this in mind, we would definitely agree with the 10+ age suggestion on the box. Once the rules are established however, gameplay was thoroughly enjoyable and Monkey Palace has been requested many times since; always a good sign! We really like the idea of competing to win whilst playing co-operatively, and this really helps make Monkey Palace stand apart from other family games.

The Chaos Cards team can’t wait to see what Dotted Games comes up with next! We think this game is ‘top banana’ and a great start for the Lego and Asmodee collaboration. Monkey Palace has a good looking set up, and should appeal to Families as well as hardcore Lego fans. It possibly may not appeal to the more serious of Board Gamers, but its a fun little game to play of an evening, and perfect for Wintery Christmas evenings with the family. Don’t forget that Chaos Cards stocks a wide range of Lego on the website, including some super cute Christmas decorations and fun gift ideas.

Have you played Monkey Palace yet, what are your thoughts?  Are you looking forward to the future releases? Do let us know on our socials :D We always love to hear from you.
