Light & Shadow come to Flesh & Blood
Written by Jonnii Small - Jun 21 2021
Just over a month ago, we saw the release of Flesh & Blood’s latest set, Monarch! It’s 1st Edition collector’s printing meant that it was pretty difficult to get a hold of anywhere unless you were quick! (We still have some available though, right here!) Thankfully, Legend Story Studios are intent on getting this fantastic game to as many players as possible, so the Unlimited Printing is now here!
Let’s do a little backtracking if you haven’t heard of this new classic Trading Card Game. Flesh & Blood harkens back to classic TCGs you may have played before, like Magic the Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh!, but with a twist. You take on the role of a hero, complete with a full set of equipment and weapons, as well as a deck too! Your deck is filled with cards that you’ll play to beef yourself up, damage your opponent, or one of many other things! The things that make this TCG stand out in the crowd include:
The Resource system, where you’ll pitch cards from your hand to create the resources you’ll need to play your cards, but normally, cards that do create higher amounts of resources aren’t as strong as those that create lower amounts.
Each turn you’ll only have 1 Action Point to play an Action Card, so pick wisely! Many cards will give you more or have the text ‘Go Again’ to indicate that you get an additional Action Point.
Attacks you perform can be defended against by almost any card in your hand, giving players tougher decisions about what cards they want to keep in their hands.
All of the classes currently available play pretty differently, meaning great replay-ability and a varied game each time you play!
There’s a lot more to this fantastic game! But if you haven’t check out Flesh & Blood, we would highly recommend getting a couple of decks and experiencing the fantastic gameplay for yourself! We’re now four sets in to Flesh & Blood, and with a huge cardpool available and no signs of slowing down, there’s no better time to get into this brilliant TCG!
On to the latest set, Monarch! First up, this set brought ‘Talents’ to the lands of Rathe in both Shadow and Light. Talents look to further differentiate heroes from one another. The four heroes available in Monarch are: Prism (Light Illusionist), Boltyn (Light Warrior), Levia (Shadow Brute), and Chane (Shadow Runeblade). Players controlling these heroes can build their decks using cards from their Talent card pool (Shadow/Light), their Class card pool (Illusionist, Warrior, Brute, Runeblade), the ‘Generic’ card pool, and cards for their specific Talent & Class Combination! Deckbuilding capabilities are now massive, allowing you to further customize how your favourite hero plays! These heroes are testament to that, being quite varied from the classes that proceeded them! Levia, for example, has a ‘Brute’-like ability we’ve seen before, maintaining the ‘6 or more Power’ requirement but adding a twist that’s more in line with her playstyle. Many of their ‘Shadow Brute’ cards have ‘Blood Debt’, which damage you while they’re in your banished zone, Levia’s ability let’s you remove that, but still gain the benefit of those banished cards to pull out some real powerful combos! Chane, being a Shadow Runeblade, again takes a similar approach to the Runeblade cards we’ve seen before, instead creating ‘Soul Shackle’ tokens instead of ‘Runechant’ tokens. Both of these Shadow heroes work around cards in the banished zone, bringing them back from there for greater benefits!
Taking a look at Boltyn, the Light Warrior, their abilities allow you to use your ‘Soul’, cards you’ve ‘Charged’ and placed under your hero, to unleash some fantastical attacks. A lot of Boltyn’s cards revolve around either helping them charge or banishing cards in your soul to increase your damage! Similarly, Prism uses their soul to create ‘Spectral Shield’ tokens to protect themselves from attacks and has some massively powerful cards with the downside being the ‘Phantasm’ keyword, allowing them to be destroyed relatively easily should the opponent have the right card in their hand. Prism also comes packaged with the new ‘Illusionist’ class, that again focusses on littering the field with ‘Spectral Shield’ tokens and powerful action cards!
Of course, there are many more cards that help make these new characters the best that they can be, from Legendary equipment like ‘Vestige of Sol’, that gives you more resources if you’ve already put something into your hero’s soul this turn, and ‘Valiant Dynamo’ that allows Warrior’s to repair damage that’s been done to their armour! As usual, Monarch contains a lot of Majestic cards that will be vital to your plays. ‘Doomsday’ lets Levia create a ‘Blasmophet, the Soul Harvester’ token, a massive ally that can remove cards from the opponent’s soul. And ‘Celestial Cataclysm’, a huge attack that requires you to banish 3 cards from your soul!
There is a lot to discover and get excited about in this set, and that’s not even looking at the fantastic Blitz Decks that come with a foil version of the young hero of your choice and the Mentor cards that aren’t available anywhere else currently!
